Youth Empowerment Program launched in Bundalangi
Port Victoria March 24, 2017
Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Mrs. Sicily Kariuki, has charged youth to be on the forefront to defend the National Youth Service (NYS) Youth Empowerment Program from its detractors.
Mrs Kariuki described opponents of the program as ignorant of the achievements realized through the over one hundred thousand enlisted cohorts across the country since its inception in 2014.
Describing the Program as an effective avenue in tackling the youth unemployment problem in the country, the CS said that no amount of intimidation or threats would derail it from achieving the desired goal of empowering the youths.
She added that the program has been tested and proven to have direct transformation to this segment of the society.
“As the government we would not allow some few misguided elements to trash the efforts being undertaken to engage the youth in meaningful activities to enable them achieve socio-economic empowerment.” CS Kariuki added.
Speaking when she officially launched the Budalangi National Youth Service (NYS) Youth Empowerment Programme in Port Victoria on Friday, CS Kariuki said, “This brings to 107 constituencies already undertaken in the country and we are not stopping until all the 290 constituencies are covered".
Regarding the Affirmative Action Funds being managed by her Ministry, CS Kariuki advised youths to not to rely on white color jobs and instead take advantage of and apply for interest free loans to start viable projects thus creating employment.
At the same time, CS Kariuki noted that this program is tailored to offer them mentorship opportunities so as to equip them with technical knowledge required for their success.
Challenging the cohorts to emulate others who have succeeded doing business, Mrs. Kariuki pointed out that they identify viable business opportunities available citing farming, construction of rental houses among others.
CS Kariuki said women in the area are also catered for under the Huduma Kitchen initiative where they will earn Sh 5.4 million by the end of the programme.
Later, CS Kariuki who was accompanied by the Budalangi MP Hon. Ababu Namwamba visited Huduma Mashinani at the venue before disbursing over Ksh5 million to women groups in the area. Budalangi2
