200 Makonde youths enlisted in the Youth Empowerment programme
Msambweni, May 13, 2017

Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Mrs. Sicily Kariuki has revealed that 200 youths from the Kenya’s 43rd tribe, the Makonde, have been included in the enlisted 900 cohorts recruited in Msambweni National Youth Service (NYS) Youth Empowerment Programme.

CS Kariuki who was accompanied by her counterparts, CS Mwangi Kiunjuri for Devolution and Planning, CS Eugene Wamwala, Water and Irrigation and CS Dan Kazungu from Mining, said that this is the first time in history of the country that the programme has registered the Makonde youth.

Noting that this has been possible due to the visionary leadership of H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, CS Kariuki reaffirmed that the Jubilee administration has surpassed the previous governments in terms of development adding that it has achieved a lot within a period of less than five years.
Mrs. Kariuki made the remarks when she officially launched the Youth Empowerment Programme at Sawasawa grounds in Msambweni, Kwale County.
Responding to a request from local leaders to ensure the Makonde youths are also enlisted in the forthcoming Kenya Defence Forces recruitment drive across the country, CS Kariuki promised to consult her Defence counterpart with a view to consider their wishes.

Enumerating the development record of the government, CS Kariuki acknowledged that mega developments have evidently been spread across the country regardless of the regions political alignment.

At the same time, CS Kariuki disbursed Ksh 8.9 million in support of various women groups from the Women Enterprise Fund adding that the fund has issued Ksh32 million in the county alone since its inception. The CS also noted that the Youth Enterprise Development Fund had disbursed over Ksh57 million in the county.

“Taking up these opportunities will ensure that you are able to start and develop something of your own that will uplift not only yourself but the community in which you live in. You have the potential, the energy and creativity all of which are ingredients of an entrepreneur,’’ CS Kariuki told the residents.

Unlike the "Kazi kwa Vijana" programme undertaken previously and allegedly benefited older people instead of the intended youth, Mrs. Kariuki reiterated that the current one is genuine and urged the youth to safeguard it. She affirmed that this programme has tremendously transformed livelihoods of thousands of youths across the country, citing the over Ksh.1.7 billion saved in various youth SACCOs for their benefit.

During the Function, the CSs also distributed famine relief food to Kwale residents.

CS Kiunjiri assured the cohorts and residents who attended the event that food crisis in the country will soon be a thing of the past. He told the residents that maize imported by the government to mitigate the situation was being off-loaded at Kilindini harbour and would be in the market soon.

On his part, Water and irrigation CS Wamalwa said that the government has put into place elaborate strategies to end perennial water shortage in the coast region and the entire country at large. Mining CS Dan Kazungu appealed to the residents not to gamble with their lives and instead elect visionary and progressive leaders rooting for the continuity of the Jubilee administration.

Others who addressed the gathering included; Kwale County Governor Hon.Salim Mvurya, MP for Kinango Hon. Ngozi Rai, MP for Lunga Lunga Hon. Khatib Mwashetani, Kwale Woman Representative Zeinabu Chidzuga and Director General, NYS Dr. Richard Ndubai.
