Korogocho play ground1Public Service Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Professor Margaret Kobia, today visited Korogocho playgrounds to oversee the rehabilitation of the facility as directed by HE President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday, 26th February 2017 during the FIFA World Cup Trophy Reception Ceremony at State House Nairobi.

The facility was formerly occupied by the National Youth Service (NYS), and has long vacated. It is currently managed by local community members and it's used by area youths as a recreational facility and as a sports talent centre.

Accompanied by the National Youth Service (NYS) Director General, Dr. Richard Ndubai and other senior government and NYS officials, CS Kobia informed residents that, NYS will embark on rehabilitation works in a week's time and carry out the directive to the latter as directed by the Head of State.

While noting concerns from the managers of the facility, Prof Kobia directed them to liaise with the local administration so as to detail their complaints with a view of finding a lasting solution.

“Listening to you, it emerges that there are different stakeholders claiming a stake to this facility and that you have several complaints which need a systematic way of dealing with. It is imperative to have a consultative meeting between all of you and the local administration, under the guidance of the Mathare Assistant County Commissioner", CS Kobia advised.

The Cabinet Secretary assured the residents that the rehabilitation works will be carried out in phases and will begin with leveling of the pitch, planting of grass and improvements works on the building to bring it to an acceptable standard.

Prof. Kobia also urged the officials to compile a memorandum which will guide on how to handle the emerging issues concerning the affairs of the stadium.

Responding to their questions, CS Kobia underlined the Government's willingness to cooperate with them in solving their problems amicably while at the same time sparing no efforts in improving the quality the living environment of its citizens, regardless of whether they reside in slums or in urban areas.
On completion, this playground will be used by the local community.
