Othaya, Nyeri December 16, 2016

Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Mrs. Sicily Kariuki has said that investing in youths and women has been identified as the most viable option towards creating employment and spurring economic growth in the country.
CS Kariuki said this when she launched the Othaya Constituency NYS Youth Empowerment Programme at Othaya Stadium in Nyeri County on Friday.
“The Government is spending heavily in projects aimed at empowering women and the youth because this is one of the most viable options that we have,” Mrs. Kariuki told the hundreds of youths and women gathered at the stadium.
During the occassion, CS Kariuki underscored the impact the NYS Youth Empowerment Programme is having in transforming lives of the vulnerable groups in the society in areas it had been launched.
“Today marks the launching of the 81st NYS Youth Empowerment Programme. We hope to cover all the 290 constituencies with time,” the CS observed.
She said that the Othaya programme will focus on developing infrastructural and environmental projects and also in the reforestation of Karima Hill with a view of increasing the country’s forest cover.
She added that the youth cohorts will also be working on access roads, unlocking drainage systems and the rehabilitation of dams and water pans among other tasks.
Reminding the residents that her visit in the area followed a request by the area MP and granted by President Uhuru Kenyatta during his recent visit to the area, CS Kariuki assured residents that that the NYS will carry out works on the Othaya Stadium to ensure that it is upgraded to the required standards.
On economic empowerment, the CS noted that a lot of progress has been made following the launch of Affirmative Action Funds by Government in empowering women, youth and persons with disability.
“Looking at you, I see hope in you. You must pursue your dreams. It is imperative to engage in activities that will change your livelihoods such as agri-business, farming, fish and poultry keeping,” she advised.
CS, Kariuki also appealed to Othaya residents to reciprocate the government’s gesture by maintaining peace and unity, adding that no development can be achieved in a chaotic society.
The 900 NYS cohorts recruited in Othaya Sub-County will benefit from Ksh30 million for the next three months in operation,” CS Kariuki noted.
