Enhancing Manufacturing  

  • Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP) is a World Bank Funded Project under the Directorate of Youth. The Project has facilitated 1069 youth to access grants for the establishment of cottage industries in 5 Counties (Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kwale and Nakuru). The Youth were able to establish various cottage businesses including brickmaking, beadwork, agribusiness, and fashion and design.
  • 20,000 more youth are lined up for grants by the year 2021 in the following 17 counties: Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kwale, Nakuru, Kiambu, Migori, Kitui, Turkana, Bungoma, Kisii, Kakamega, Mandera, Wajir, Nyandarua, Machakos and Kilifi.
  • National Youth Service (NYS) through Cotton growing directly contributes to cotton production of 200,000 bales thus contributing to bridging the current shortfall in the textile industry. So far more than 300 acres are planted with cotton in Lambwe, Hindi and Witu NYS field units. Plans are underway to increase cotton production to 1,000 acres.

Food Security And Nutrition

  • The Kenya School of Government (KSG) has scheduled a research project on knowledge management for food security in Kenya through which necessary information will be collated to aid in policy and decision making. Embu Campus has partnered with the County Government of Meru to train over 10,000 youth in a bid to embrace agriculture for income.
  • Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) allocated 405.2 Million Kenya Shillings to youth undertaking initiatives in agro processing. The Fund has also introduced a financing product, Agri-Bizz to particularly promote Agri business among the youth. The maximum disbursable amount is 2 million Kenya Shillings available to both individuals and groups.
  • The National Youth Service (NYS) in partnership with the Kenya Prisons Service launched a seed potato production unit which uses aeroponic technology in February, 2019 at NYS Tumaini farm in Nyandarua County. The objective of the project is to produce seed potato for planting on the 300 acre NYS farm in Tumaini. This will in turn go a long way in meeting the institution’s annual potato demand which currently stands at 8,899 metric tons per year.
  • The State Department for Gender is working with the Ministry of Agriculture to mobilize women groups and individual women to create 400 cottage industries spread across the country which will create over 10,000 job opportunities.

Universal Health Coverage

  • Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) allocated Kshs. 42.1 Million to youth carry out enterprises in the health industry.  The Fund has also partnered with Population Services (PS) Kenya and National Aids Control Council (NACC) Kenya to conduct public awareness and sensitizations on health and entrepreneurship related issues.
  • The State Department for Gender has procured and distributed 14.8 million sanitary towels to 3.7 million girls in public primary, special primary and secondary schools.
  • The State Department for Gender is working in partnership with the County Governments and the Ministry of Health to establish Gender Based Violence Recovery Centres (GBVRC). A GBVRC Centre has been established and operationalized at the Kilifi General Hospital where survivors receive integrated medical and psychosocial support services.

Affordable Housing

  • Huduma Kenya partnership with the State Department of Housing through Huduma Centres has made it easy for Kenyans applying for affordable housing programme to access free online services by providing technical support on Boma Yangu platform.
  • KYEOP aims at training directly 70,000 youth in Life skills (LST) and Core business skills (CBST) Training, to impart them with employability skills. The Youth then go to NITA (National Industrial Authority) for industrial attachments and internship, so as to gain work-place experience in various trades in formal
