Principal Secretary, Gender Affairs

psgenderZeinab W. Hussein (Mrs.) is the Principal Secretary, State Department of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, a newly established State Department, following the recent reorganization of Government by His Excellency, The President of Kenya in December 2015.

Being the Principal Secretary in charge of Gender Affairs, she is charged with the responsibility of: coordinating the implementation of Gender equality and women empowerment programmes in the country, overseeing the access and utilization of Affirmative Action Funds – Women Enterprise Fund, UWEZO, YEDF, ASSDF, the 30% Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) for women, youth and persons with disabilities; elimination of Gender Based Violence in all its forms including FGM, and; ensuring access to justice and safeguarding other gender equality as espoused in the Constitution.

During her short tenure, the Principal Secretary has successfully steered gender equality and women empowerment initiatives and innovatively steered access to, and the strengthening of the Governance and Management of Affirmative Action Funds. This has seen three affirmative action funds disburse close to Kshs. 80 million in her first two months in office.

Zeinab brings to the State department a wealth of experience and expertise gained from East Africa & Africa Delivery Hub, McKinsey & Company, where she recently worked as Head of Professional Development & Human Resources. Prior to this, Zeinab had served at Accelerate Africa, a management consulting firm that focuses exclusively on serving the growth, expansion and management needs of Africa’s Companies while placing focus on Africa’s SMEs, Family owned businesses and Africa’s Medium to Large organizations, a company she co-founded. Accelerate supports and strengthens the foundations that prepare the success of companies beyond their first generation founders and/or leaders. Key capabilities are in Organizational Transformation, Systems and Process Alignments, Big Data Management, Recruitment and Governance.

She also worked as Head of Recruitment and Administration as well as a Consultant at McKinsey & Company and as a Regional Sales and Marketing manager – West Africa, for Shell Company.

Zeinab is a graduate of the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government (MPA, Business and Economics) and the University of Nairobi (MBA – Business, International Business Management).
